The French port of Calais, a key route for European trade with the UK through Dover, has been impacted by a work stoppage today, Thursday, February 27th, after port workers walked out.
The CGT union organised the action, which was officially due to begin at 00:00 this morning, but only seems to have been impacting services since around late morning.
The strike is set to finish at 18:00 hours and up to now export services are only been slightly affected, while imports have now stopped arriving and vehicles are starting to backlog in or outside Calais.
The union said that it called the wakout because of changes to retirement provision for dock workers in national pension reforms. This dispute has led to strikes and protests all over the country in recent months and has resulted in work stoppages at other French ports this month, including Saint-Nazaire, Montoir, Nantes and Le Havre.
Should the stoppage escalate, then there will likely be disruption to road freight services during the next few days.
