Shipping Industry Watches Suez But Problems Remain

Maersk Line took a significant step toward normalising global container shipping by becoming the first major carrier to reinstate a fully regular service through the Suez Canal, but security issues have returned since.

The decision reflects growing confidence that security conditions in the Red Sea are improving after months of disruption.

The Danish group confirmed that its Middle East–US East Coast Loop (MECL) has resumed transits through the canal in both directions. The revived schedule began with an eastbound sailing from Charleston on 10 January, followed by a westbound departure from Jebel Ali on 15 January.

This move follows a series of successful test voyages that demonstrated the practicality of operating safely via the canal. Several vessels completed recent passages without incident, providing reassurance that current conditions support a cautious resumption of normal services.

Maersk has nevertheless stressed that the regional security environment remains fluid. The company continues to monitor developments closely and has maintained contingency plans, making clear that continued use of the Suez route depends on sustained stability.

However, with Houthi rebels implying that attacks may be back on the horizon, CMA CGM have now rerouted the export legs they were trialling away from Suez. At this point it is unclear whether Maersk will continue the MECL service through the Red Sea region.

The MultiFreight team are monitoring developments with great interest.
