The Value Of Collaboration At The Port of Felixstowe

The Port of Felixstowe is a vital gateway for UK trade, bringing together a wide range of businesses operating within a complex and fast-moving logistics environment. Effective collaboration between port users and authorities is essential, and one organisation that has supported this for decades is the Felixstowe Port Users’ Association (FPUA).

Established in 1969, the FPUA is an independent body representing companies that conduct business in or through the Port of Felixstowe. The Association reflects the full breadth of the port community, including shipping lines, freight forwarders, hauliers, warehouse operators and other port-related businesses.

The FPUA works closely with the Port of Felixstowe, HM Revenue & Customs, the UK Border Agency, the Suffolk Coastal Port Health Authority, and other official bodies. By acting as a liaison between port users and regulators, the Association helps promote practical solutions, clear communication and efficient port operations.

The FPUA also participates in a number of meetings each year on behalf of its members. These include, but are not limited to, the Felixstowe Freight Forum, the Felixstowe Quality Partnership, the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, Suffolk and Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce breakfast meetings, and the Felixstowe Port Security meeting.

In addition to its operational role, the FPUA is committed to supporting the local community through fundraising events such as its annual Golf Day and Christmas Charity Ball. Since 2017, the Association has raised over £91,000 for charitable causes. This milestone highlights what can be achieved when the industry unites with a common purpose

Membership is structured across five categories to ensure balanced representation, with one member representing each category.

Category 1 – Shipping Lines
Category 2 – Freight Forwarders
Category 3 – Hauliers
Category 4 – ERTS / Warehouse Keepers
Category 5 – Other Port-Related Companies

MultiFreight’s Managing Director – Ian Taylor – represents Category 5 members, highlighting MultiFreight’s active involvement in the Felixstowe port community.

Membership is open to companies with an ongoing business activity through the port and costs just £130 per year. Which strikes us a modest investment for access to industry representation, networking opportunities and engagement with key stakeholders.
