According to a report in The Loadstar, HMRC are struggling to process an 11 month backlog of delayed declarations.
HMRC is believed to be now cracking down on what has been described as “widespread abuse” of the delayed declaration procedures, which could be costing the treasury hundreds of millions of pounds.
It is believed that non-UK companies, in particular, have not submitted any post arrival information and the treasury has promised HMRC additional funding to go after non-compliant businesses.
Part of the issue is that delayed declarations are considered supplementary, and can only be made by an approved UK company using a simplified import procedure CFSP (Customs Freight Simplified Procedure).
With the second Brexit transition going live in January, HMRC is urging importers, that have not filed full declarations so far, to do so immediately.
