There could be several challenges in the coming months for the coveted title of having the ‘World’s Largest Container Ship’, as numerous carriers are set to introduce newly built ships into service.
Right now, the official record is held by Evergreen Lines, with their ‘Ever Ace’ able to carry 23,992 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units). However, due to come into service any time now is the ‘OOCL Spain’, which has recently been delivered to OOCL and is capable of carrying 24,188 TEU.
The OOCL Spain’s occupation of the top spot may be very short lived, as MSC are expected to introduce an even bigger ship next month, when the ‘MSC Irina’ is introduced to their fleet with it’s 24,346 TEU capacity.
Even though it is due to change hands twice in the coming weeks, the record could be extended further, as there are numerous new builds joining the three global carrier alliances in the next few months.
Perhaps not the best time for carriers to be introducing this extra capacity, with such low demand from Asia!
